Kuzan’s ice is dangerous. The competition is worse.
Kuzan, better known as Aokiji, is no ordinary ex-Admiral. He now fights with the Blackbeard Pirates, still carries the kind of power that can threaten Yonko-level opponents, and remains one of the most intimidating Haki users in the series. But if there is one thing he does especially well, it is using the Hie Hie no Mi.
As a Logia fruit, the Hie Hie no Mi lets Kuzan create and transform into ice at will. That means instant freezing, battlefield control, and the deeply unpleasant ability to turn an enemy into a statue before they have time to process their mistake. He can freeze oceans with a touch and launch devastating attacks in moments. Impressive, yes. Untouchable, no.
Several Devil Fruits in One Piece can still beat, counter, or simply overwhelm Kuzan’s ice-based arsenal.
1. Yami Yami no Mi
- Type: Logia
- Ability: Darkness manipulation
The Yami Yami no Mi, used by Marshall D. Teach, better known as Blackbeard, is widely considered one of the most broken Devil Fruits in the series. Blackbeard obtained it after killing Thatch of the Whitebeard Pirates, and the fruit’s core gimmick is brutally simple: it cancels out other Devil Fruit powers.
That is a huge problem for just about everyone, Kuzan included. The fruit has no known counter in terms of Devil Fruit abilities, and Blackbeard has used it to tremendous effect, including overpowering Ace’s strongest attack and absorbing Whitebeard’s quake punches with apparent ease.
Its one drawback is also a major one: unlike most Logias, it does not grant the user a body that naturally intangibly slips past attacks. Still, the tradeoff is worth it when your power is basically “no, yours does not work.”
2. Gura Gura no Mi
- Type: Paramecia
- Ability: Earthquake generation
Often called the strongest fruit in its category, the Gura Gura no Mi gives its user the ability to create earthquakes capable of tearing the world apart. In raw destruction, it is in a different league from most other Devil Fruits.
A single attack can shake an island. At Marineford, its power was a central reason the base ended up in ruins after the war. Kuzan’s ice does not offer much comfort against vibrations and catastrophic shockwaves, which also means the fruit can bypass the usual frozen-battlefield logic. If the ground, air, and everything nearby are cracking apart, the ice problem tends to sort itself out.
3. Magu Magu no Mi
- Type: Logia
- Ability: Magma manipulation
The Magu Magu no Mi belongs to Fleet Admiral Akainu, a man whose personality and power are apparently in perfect agreement. It is one of the most destructive Devil Fruits in the series and is explicitly superior to Kuzan’s fruit in elemental terms.
Akainu can flood a battlefield with magma and unleash attacks that inflict enormous damage even on monsters like Whitebeard, who lost half his face to one strike. Against Kuzan, magma brings overwhelming heat and a direct elemental edge. Ice is excellent until someone turns the temperature argument into a crater.
4. Mera Mera no Mi
- Type: Logia
- Ability: Fire manipulation
The Mera Mera no Mi was once Ace’s fruit and is now wielded by Sabo, who inherited Ace’s will and has not exactly been shy about using it. Fire naturally pushes back against ice, which gives the Mera Mera no Mi a built-in advantage over Kuzan’s power set.
At Marineford, Ace was able to neutralize one of Kuzan’s strongest attacks, which makes the matchup pretty clear. The fruit also brings serious offensive force of its own. Ace destroyed multiple ships with a single hit and could unleash an island-sized attack. Fire does not just melt ice. In One Piece, it also tends to make a very loud point while doing so.
5. Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu
- Type: Mythical Zoan
- Ability: Dragon transformation
Kaido’s Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu, turns him into a massive dragon with devastating elemental attacks. The fruit grants fire, lightning, and wind-based powers, along with absurd physical strength and durability.
Kaido used it to dominate enemies and become one of the most feared pirates alive. It also helped him push Luffy’s Gear 5 form to the limit in a battle that went far longer than anyone probably deserved. Against Kuzan, the sheer scale of the transformation and the crushing durability matter just as much as the elemental pressure. Ice is useful. Being a walking natural disaster is more useful.
6. Pika Pika no Mi
- Type: Logia
- Ability: Light manipulation
The Pika Pika no Mi was introduced during the Sabaody Archipelago arc, where Kizaru made the 11 Supernovas look collectively underprepared. The fruit allows him to become and control light, create light-based weapons, and even form clones of himself.
Its biggest advantage is speed. Kizaru can move at the speed of light, and only fighters with exceptional Observation Haki can keep up. Against Kuzan, that kind of mobility can decide everything before the ice even lands. If the battlefield becomes a race, light does not exactly start at a disadvantage.
7. Ope Ope no Mi
- Type: Paramecia
- Ability: Spatial manipulation within a defined range
The Ope Ope no Mi has long been known as the ultimate Devil Fruit, which explains why the Marines wanted it so badly. Trafalgar Law awakened its power before the Wano arc, pushing it to a level that makes ordinary combat rules look decorative.
Within its range, the fruit allows Law to dissect bodies, manipulate space, and perform abilities that even Haki does not fully shut down. Law used it to defeat Big Mom and later gave Blackbeard and his crew a fight they are not likely to forget anytime soon. Against Kuzan, the Ope Ope no Mi is dangerous because it does not need to play by the same physical rules ice relies on.
8. Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika
- Type: Mythical Zoan
- Ability: God transformation
Luffy’s true power as the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, changed the course of his fight with Kaido and effectively closed the gap between them. At its base, the fruit grants a rubber-like body. After awakening, it goes far beyond that.
The awakened form lets Luffy enlarge his body, turn his surroundings into rubber, and bend combat in ways no one had seen before. The defining trait is freedom: he can do whatever he imagines. That is a problem for Kuzan, whose ice works best when reality cooperates. Nika does not seem interested in cooperating.
Kuzan’s Hie Hie no Mi remains a top-tier Logia, but it is not the ceiling of power in One Piece. Between elemental counters, overwhelming destruction, and abilities that simply ignore the usual rules, these eight Devil Fruits all have credible claims to being stronger, or at least more troublesome, than the former Admiral’s ice.
