Good news for people who like complicated maps and expensive risks. The community cracked an ARG and Bungie confirmed the new Cryo Archive map for Marathon. It is set inside the first deck of the UESC Marathon ship and is meant to be a tough, endgame area with unique challenges and valuable rewards.
What Cryo Archive actually is
The Cryo Archive is designed as a pinnacle challenge. Expect raid-style puzzles, new mechanics to learn, and both AI and human opponents. Exfil zones are intentionally less reliable, so runs may not end the way you expect and teams will need to adapt as they go.
Key gameplay features:
- Security Clearance system that increases during a run and unlocks more rooms, doors, and exfil options.
- Seven heavily secured vaults that contain some of the best loot, including Unique gold weapons and high-tier materials and gear.
- New puzzles and mechanics that reward knowledge and coordination over repeated attempts.
Who can get in
This map is part of the endgame, so Bungie limited access on purpose. To enter Cryo Archive you must meet these requirements:
- Runner level at least 25.
- All six in-game factions unlocked.
- Minimum loadout value of 5,000 credits based on equipped gear.
That last rule means you cannot just slap on low-tier items to qualify. Bungie will give a one-time Sponsored Kit from the Armory containing blue-tier gear for players who meet the unlock requirements and want an unharmed first run to learn the map.
When it is available and how to play
Cryo Archive is a weekend-only map. It opens on Friday March 20 and runs across weekends, similar to a raid-style limited-time event. It is tuned for three-player crews, so it is not friendly to solo runs. If you usually play the solo-friendly Rook class, plan to team up instead.
Why this matters for Marathon
Marathon launched on March 5, 2026, and Bungie is treating it like a live service. The studio has been rolling out updates quickly, addressing player concerns such as vault stacking and changes to the battle pass and the premium currency LUX. Cryo Archive signals Bungie is pushing endgame content that asks more from players while offering some of the top rewards in return.
Short version: if you like high stakes and rare loot, Cryo Archive is for you. If you do not like risking good gear or prefer solo runs, this map will not be your friend. Either way, expect more updates and secrets as Bungie continues to tweak Marathon.
