Charles Barkley did what he does best: watch basketball, be blunt, and then say something that makes you laugh and think at the same time. After No. 11 High Point knocked off No. 5 Wisconsin 83-82 in a first-round upset, Barkley was more interested in the teams attitude than the scoreboard.
He joked about returning to college hoops
Barkley quipped that he has one year of college eligibility left and that he might show up by the next game. He said it was the energy of High Points coach that got to him. "That guy makes me want to play," Barkley said.
He also pointed out the season behind the upset. "That team has won 30 games. You win 30 games, you know how to win. Youre probably not intimidated because Wisconsin, they dont physically overwhelm you."
It was the mindset, not just the upset
Barkley broke down what stood out beyond the final score. High Point fell behind by 10 early but kept fighting. He noted the team made key plays late and did not give up.
He said, "The thing that was impressive about High Point was that they got down 10 early, but they kept battling. They never quit. They made a couple of fantastic plays down the stretch. That was an impressive win. Man, I want to see that coach. You want to play for a coach like that."
Why it mattered to Barkley
- Resilience: High Point erased an early deficit and delivered under pressure.
- Experience: A 30-win season showed Barkley the team understood how to close games.
- Leadership: The coachs energy and belief seemed to lift the players when it mattered most.
For Barkley, that mix of toughness and coaching is what separates a surprise win from a team that can make a deep run in March. He was amused, impressed, and suddenly very motivated to lace up imaginary sneakers.
