ChatGPT reaches the CarPlay dashboard
ChatGPT can now be used through Apple CarPlay if your iPhone is running iOS 26.4 or later and you have the latest version of the ChatGPT app installed, according to 9to5Mac. The update matters because Apple’s newly released iOS 26.4 adds support for “voice-based conversational apps” in CarPlay, which opens the door for AI chatbots that work through voice in the car.
So yes, the chatbot has made it into the dashboard. Progress continues to be glamorous.
Voice only, because apparently reading is too much for the road
When ChatGPT runs in CarPlay, it does not display text conversations, 9to5Mac reports. Instead, the experience is limited to voice chat. That matches Apple’s developer rules, which tell apps not to show text or images as responses in this CarPlay mode.
The interface is not completely barren, though. There are on-screen controls to mute the conversation and end it, which is helpful if ChatGPT starts narrating your route with more confidence than your actual navigation app.
A few limits still apply
According to MacRumors, you can also view a list of recent conversations you have had with ChatGPT. But there is one notable catch: you cannot summon it with a wake word. If you want to use ChatGPT through CarPlay, you will need to tap the app first.
That means the feature is convenient, but not quite hands-free in the way some people might hope. It is voice-based, yes. It is still an app, yes. Apple has simply decided the car should hear the chatbot, but not read it.
For now, the setup gives ChatGPT a place in CarPlay without turning the dashboard into a scrolling message board, which is probably for the best.
