Steam has kicked off its Spring Sale and, as always, my wishlist is screaming for attention while my wallet practices social distancing. One standout bargain is Fallout: New Vegas being sold for a mere 99 cents. Yes, under one dollar.
Why 99 cents is basically stealing
This is not just nostalgia talking. New Vegas, made by Obsidian rather than Bethesda, often gets called the best Fallout game for good reasons:
- Meaningful choices: Your decisions actually change the story and outcomes, the kind of weighty choices you rarely get in other big RPGs.
- Tonally sharp: It balances dark, disturbing moments with dry, biting humor in a way that still lands.
- Unique setting and factions: The game gives you interesting groups to side with and consequences that stick.
The things it does that others do not
Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 both have their moments and their fans. But the mix of writing, consequence, and weird atmosphere in New Vegas feels different. It can be funny and unsettling at the same time, and that combination makes choices feel serious rather than arbitrary.
Yes, there are cazadors
If you remember nothing else, remember cazadors. They are extremely unpleasant. You will meet them, you will scream, and eventually you will learn tactics to survive. That is part of the charm.
Real talk: if I did not already own New Vegas, I would buy it at this price without hesitation. At 99 cents, this is the kind of bargain you can justify even if you only play a handful of hours.
TL;DR: Steam Spring Sale equals very cheap New Vegas. If you like weighty choices, dark humor, and occasional insect-based terror, grab it while it’s 99 cents.
