Halo DNA in a Bungie World

Marathon, Bungie's extraction shooter, carries Halo in its bones. Halo's fingerprints are most evident in the weapon stash, where familiar shapes and abilities pay homage to the Master Chief's universe in Marathon's sci‑fi sandbox. It's not just aesthetic nostalgia: some firing mechanics and attachments lean decisively toward Halo‑style design.

CE Tactical Sidearm

The CE Tactical Sidearm is certainly a Halo pistol. Its grip, trigger guard, and short profile explicitly echo Master Chief's signature weapon. The same name hints at lineage, with Combat Evolved literally embedded within. In Marathon, this pistol is reliable and precise, and switching to it is quicker than reloading.

Magnum MC

Bungie also integrates Halo 1's Magnum into Marathon, within the same universe as the other weapons. It hits hard like a shotgun, but behaves more like a Destiny hand cannon — a powerful, satisfying headshot with a bit of vertical recoil that signals who commands.

V11 Punch — Plasma Pistol, Reimagined

Another clear homage is the V11 Punch, better known as the Plasma Pistol. It fires tension orbs that drain shields faster than bullets and can be charged for a single shot capable of breaking the shield. It's a classic Halo move adapted to Marathon's pacing and reload timing.

BR33 Volley Rifle with a Halo twist

Two Halo callbacks are paired here. The BR33 Volley Rifle's base form is almost identical to Halo 2's Battle Rifle, but Bungie introduces a rare accessory called Lockout Muzzle Brake. When mounted, the weapon excels in hip-fire with greater accuracy, stability, and range, making it a surprise in hip-fire.

V22 Volt Thrower and the Needler-style surprise

The V22 Volt Thrower is an SMG that uses guided rounds, and a rare accessory called Overcharge Lens turns it into an improvised Needler. The resulting effect is described as a Reactive Burst: successive shots accumulate to produce an explosion directly on the target.

The Halo imprint goes beyond weapons

Beyond the clear visual references to weapons, Halo's influence threads through Marathon's broader design. Bungie's world offers heavy movement, low gravity, and grenades that bounce with a personality all their own. There's even a Destroyer shell that looks like a Destiny titan inside Spartan armor, a wink to longtime fans who followed Bungie through its titles.

In short, Marathon doesn't hesitate to wear Halo's heart on its sleeve. The crossover is playful, deliberate, and very Bungie, proving that when it comes to weapon design, the studio can turn Halo icons into a fresh package fit for a shooter. It's a beautiful thing.
