Grizzlies confirm Morant will miss the rest of the season
Short version: Ja Morant is done for the 2025-26 season. The Memphis Grizzlies announced Tuesday that the 26-year-old guard will sit out the remainder of the campaign while he recovers from a sprain to the UCL in his left elbow.
What happened
Morant injured the ligament in his left elbow during a Jan. 21 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. After a follow-up consultation, the team recommended a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection to help the ligament heal.
What the team said
The Grizzlies: Following the injection, Morant will begin offloading the elbow and will miss the remainder of the 2025-26 season. They added he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the 2026-27 season.
Morant's season and contract snapshot
- Age: 26
- 2025-26 averages through 20 starts: 19.5 points, 8.1 assists, 3.3 rebounds
- Career averages through his first seven seasons: 22.4 points, 7.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds per game
- Drafted No. 2 overall in the 2019 NBA Draft
- Signed a five-year, $197.23 million extension in 2022; he has two years and about $87 million remaining on the deal
Context
Morant has missed notable time over the past three seasons due to injuries and suspensions, and he was available for trade earlier this year. This latest setback adds to a rocky recent stretch for Memphis.
Other roster health updates
- Forward Brandon Clarke will also miss the remainder of the season while he continues to recover from a right calf strain.
- Center Zach Edey, previously ruled out for the year with an ankle injury, had a procedure Tuesday and is expected to be ready before the 2026-27 season.
Where the team stands
The Grizzlies are 25-27, have lost 11 of their last 12 games and sit in 12th place in the Western Conference. They are scheduled to host the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday at 8 p.m. EDT. The Spurs sit near the top of the West and have been on a hot run.
Morant's absence changes Memphis' immediate outlook. The team will have to lean on depth and adjust while hoping the PRP plan and rest get him fully healthy for next season.
