Johnny Depp’s latest rum chapter

Rum has already had a fairly busy career in Johnny Depp’s orbit. There was, of course, Pirates of the Caribbean, where someone was always asking where the rum went. Then came The Rum Diary. Now Depp is adding another entry with the launch of Three Hearts Rum, a premium Caribbean-inspired brand created with his longtime friend Bobby DeLeon.

This is not one of those spirits launches that seems to appear overnight with a splashy ad campaign and a lot of vague talk about “luxury.” Depp and DeLeon say they have been developing the idea for years, aiming to build something with actual meaning that would reflect both their friendship and the heritage of rum in the Caribbean.

Depp has spent a significant amount of time in the region over the past two decades, including time on his private island in the Bahamas, Little Hall’s Pond Cay. The project also took on more weight after hurricanes caused serious damage across several Caribbean islands in recent years, pushing the founders to think about how they could support and draw attention to local communities.

A bottle with a lot on its mind

Depp designed the bottle himself, layering in symbolism pulled from his tattoos, his personal philosophy and what the release describes as the three loves of his life. In other words, the bottle is doing quite a bit of work.

The design includes:

  • An embossed flag from his island
  • A skull inspired by one of his tattoos, meant as a reminder to live fully
  • A lightning bolt representing lasting friendship
  • The number three, symbolizing new beginnings
  • Three hearts, representing the loves of his life
  • A bracelet-style charm at the top
  • The phrase “No Fear. No Malice. No Envy.” at the base

Depp said in a statement, “Rum holds the history of the islands. It’s shaped by the hands of the people who grow the cane, ferment the spirit and age it over time. Bobby and I wanted to create something that honored that tradition and the friendships that inspired it.”

DeLeon said the pair were careful not to rush the project. “We didn’t want to rush something into the world. This rum represents years of patience and collaboration. Our goal was to create something that respected the heritage of Caribbean rum while sharing the spirit of the friendship that started it,” he said.

What Three Hearts Rum actually tastes like

According to DeLeon in an interview with Forbes, Three Hearts Rum has notes of sticky toffee, with aromas of wood, spice, candied orange and vanilla. It was produced at a distillery in the Dominican Republic, where it spent five years aging in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred for another two years in former cognac barrels. That makes it a seven-year-aged rum, in case anyone was worried it might have been assembled in a hurry.

The founders say this launch is only the beginning. They intend Three Hearts Rum to be the first chapter in what they describe as “a broader exploration of Caribbean rum traditions in the years ahead.”

More to come

The company also says there are behind-the-scenes images and bottle details tied to Depp’s creative process. Because if you are going to launch a rum brand, apparently you should make sure the bottle has enough symbolism to qualify for a short seminar.
