Trailer snapshot

Jonah Hill’s dark comedy Outcome just dropped a trailer and yes, it is as delightfully awkward as it sounds. Keanu Reeves plays Reef Hawk, a recently sober movie star who chooses a strange approach to a blackmail threat: apologize to everyone he might have wronged until the person holding a damaging tape reveals themselves.

The pitch, in plain English

Reef figures that if he goes back into the public and asks forgiveness from people who hate him, one of those apologies might expose the blackmailer. In the trailer he deadpans, "I won’t say that I was hiding a heroin addiction from the public and that my best friends and my insane lawyer helped me cover it up for years."

Later, Ira, Reef’s lawyer played by Jonah Hill, lays out the plan: "I need to know everyone who hates you. You need to go and apologize to them, and without them realizing it, feel out if they’re the ones behind the video."

Who’s in the cast

The film is fronted by Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill. It also features a wide-ranging supporting cast including Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Susan Lucci, Laverne Cox, David Spade, Martin Scorsese, Atsuko Okatsuka, Roy Wood Jr., Welker White, Kaia Gerber and Ivy Wolk.

Behind the camera

Jonah Hill directed Outcome, co-wrote the script with Ezra Woods and stars as Reef’s lawyer. He produces the film alongside Matt Dines and Alison Goodwin.

What Hill says the film is about

At a recent press day Hill described Outcome as "a metaphor for what we all go through, living on social media. Social media has made us obsessed what people we don’t know think of us, instead of caring about what the people who know us best think of us." The movie looks like it uses exaggerated comedy to make a point about reputation, shame and performative apologies.

When and where

Outcome will be released on Apple TV on April 10.
