The Pokémon Company just dropped new abilities for the Mega Evolutions of the Legends Z-A starters: Meganium, Emboar, and Feraligatr. If you care about competitive play or enjoy chaos, this matters. Pokémon Champions is confirmed for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, with a mobile release planned for later this year.
The new Mega abilities
Each Mega gets a distinct ability that changes how it fights. Two of them are brand new, and one is an existing ability applied to a Mega form. Here is what they do and why they might be a problem for the rest of the roster.
Mega Emboar - Mold Breaker
Mold Breaker lets Emboar ignore the opponent's Ability when it uses moves. That is straightforward and powerful.
- This means Mega Emboar can ignore defensive or reactive abilities like Well Baked Body, Flash Fire, and Sturdy.
- It does not change Emboar's move pool, but bypassing those protections is a big tactical advantage.
Mega Feraligatr - Dragonize
Dragonize acts like Pixelate but for Dragon typing. It converts Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves and increases their power by 20 percent.
- Mega Feraligatr gains Dragon as a secondary type, and Dragonize makes many of its big Normal attacks hit as Dragon moves.
- It cannot learn Extreme Speed, but it does learn heavy-hitting Normal moves such as Thrash, Facade, Uproar, Giga Impact, and Double-Edge. Those will become Dragon-type and stronger under Dragonize.
- Turning those into Dragon moves helps Feraligatr deal with other Dragon types and shifts its matchup profile.
Mega Meganium - Mega Sol
Mega Sol is the headline-grabber. It makes Meganium act as if harsh sunlight is in effect for its moves, without actually changing the battlefield weather for everyone else.
- Solar Beam fires immediately with no charge. That alone makes it more threatening.
- Synthesis heals more than usual under sunny conditions.
- If Meganium can learn Growth, Mega Sol would make that move grant plus two to Attack and Special Attack instead of plus one.
- Weather Ball becomes a Fire-type move with a 50 percent power boost, improving coverage.
- Importantly, Mega Sol appears to benefit only the Mega Meganium itself. It will still work even if the opponent sets up rain, and it does not give Fire-type allies a global power increase.
Why this matters for competitive play
These abilities change not only what each Mega wants to do, but also how players will build teams to stop them. Mold Breaker removes common defensive counters. Dragonize rewrites Feraligatr's damage type and strengths. Mega Sol gives Meganium immediate and reliable boosts that do not help the entire field.
With official VGC events already announced, early reads on the meta will be important. Expect a period of rapid adaptation where teams test counters and new strategies. Which of these Megas will be the most disruptive is open for debate, but each of the three has tools that could become staples in competitive lineups.
