In a strategic move to bolster its production capabilities, Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI-powered filmmaking startup founded by actor and director Ben Affleck. The deal, terms of which were not disclosed, brings the entire 16-person InterPositive team—comprising engineers, researchers, and creatives—into Netflix's fold. Affleck will take on a role as a senior adviser to the streaming giant, providing ongoing guidance on integrating the technology into Netflix's workflow.
A Focus on Filmmaker-Centric AI
Unlike many AI tools that generate content from scratch, InterPositive's system is designed to work within existing production frameworks. According to Affleck, the technology builds an AI model based on a project's dailies—the raw footage shot each day—and then integrates this model into post-production. This allows filmmakers to perform tasks like color grading, relighting shots, and adding visual effects with greater precision and efficiency. Affleck emphasized in a statement that the approach is not about text-prompting or creating content from nothing, but rather enhancing the tools available to artists.
Netflix plans to offer access to InterPositive's technology to its creative partners, with no immediate plans to sell it commercially. This aligns with the company's stated goal of keeping filmmakers at the center of the creative process, a point reiterated by Netflix executives in the acquisition announcement.
Strategic Timing and Industry Context
This acquisition comes just one week after Netflix withdrew from a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery's studios and streaming businesses, a deal that ultimately went to Paramount Skydance. The move signals Netflix's continued investment in proprietary technology rather than large-scale content library acquisitions. Historically, Netflix has preferred to build its own tools, making this purchase a notable exception that underscores the unique value it sees in InterPositive's offerings.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer, highlighted that InterPositive's AI will provide partners with "more choices, more control and more protection for their vision." She stressed that new tools should expand creative freedom without replacing the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's chief product and technology officer, added that current generative AI video platforms often lack a filmmaker's perspective, whereas InterPositive's tools are designed to support higher-quality content production, not just faster or cheaper output.
InterPositive's Development and Vision
Affleck founded InterPositive in 2022 after observing the early rise of AI in production and identifying gaps in existing models. The startup began by filming a proprietary dataset on a controlled soundstage to mimic real production environments. Its first AI model was trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency while preserving cinematic rules, even under challenges like missing shots or incorrect lighting. Affleck noted that built-in restraints protect creative intent, ensuring decisions remain in the hands of artists.
In his statement, Affleck expressed enthusiasm for continuing this work with Netflix, aiming to provide the broader creative community with access to these tools. The acquisition reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry where technology is leveraged to enhance storytelling, but with a firm emphasis on human creativity and judgment.
