Good news for anyone who has shouted at a TV during a sports comeback movie and thought, I could do that, but funnier: Netflix has officially named Will Ferrell’s golf comedy series.

The name

The show will be called The Hawk, a nod to Ferrell’s character, Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins, who is presented as a fictional golf legend with a flair for drama and questionable decisions on the green.

The setup

In The Hawk, Lonnie Hawkins was the world’s top golfer back in 2004. Now he’s on the back nine of his career and trying to get his mojo back. His body whispers retirement, his heart yells otherwise, and everyone around him - including his ex-wife and his son Lance, golf’s new golden boy - thinks he’s past it. But Lonnie is convinced one more major is one stroke away from the greatest comeback golf has ever seen.

Who’s in the clubhouse

  • Will Ferrell as Lonnie "The Hawk" Hawkins
  • Molly Shannon as Stacy, Lonnie’s foul-mouthed ex-wife
  • Jimmy Tatro, Fortune Feimster, Luke Wilson, Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver and David Hornsby in supporting roles

The teaser and a small pause

Netflix has released a first-look teaser for the series, giving fans a taste of the swagger, the cringe, and the inevitable emotional putt. Filming did hit a minor bump when Ferrell suffered a small off-set injury in November. It was not serious, but it did force the production to shuffle the schedule while he recovered.

Who’s making it happen

On the production side, Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum and Alix Taylor are executive producers for Gloria Sanchez Productions. Rian Johnson, Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue serve as executive producers for T-Street. Additional executive producers include Chris Henchy, Harper Steele, David Gordon Green and Andrew Guest.

If you like your comedies with a side of sporting delusion, prepare to root for the underdog who refuses to stay under. Or at least enjoy the wardrobe choices.
