A different kind of main event
Oktagon MMA is preparing to lean into the violence, at least in the carefully regulated way that modern combat sports allow. The promotion’s next event is set for April 11 at the Enea Arena in Szczecin, Poland, and the headline fight will feature Poland’s Michal Materla against Germany’s Christian Jungwirth.
The bout, which pits Materla’s 33-11 record against Jungwirth’s 16-9 mark, will be contested under Oktagon’s new “Stand and Bang” rules. For anyone wondering whether that means subtle footwork and tactical wrestling exchanges, the answer appears to be no. The idea is to keep the action upright and focused on striking.
According to co-founder Ondrej Novotny, the new rule set allows boxing with MMA gloves and clinching, but does not permit kicks or takedowns. In other words, it is a stripped-down version of mixed martial arts that removes some of the more complicated parts and leaves the punching.
Novotny recently said the matchup between Materla and Jungwirth under these rules would be something special, which is a polite way of saying the promotion expects fans to get what they came for: less grappling, more damage, and very little opportunity for anyone to take a breather.
The new format should give Oktagon’s audience a clear change of pace from a standard MMA card, especially at the top of the bill. Whether it becomes a regular feature or just a one-off experiment, the April 11 main event will be the first major test of how much appetite there is for a rule set that removes kicks and takedowns while keeping the gloves small and the intentions obvious.
