Another round for Ghostface

Scream 8 is now in development at Spyglass, which means the masked menace is not done making life difficult for everyone in a dark hallway. Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, the writing duo known as the Zuckerman sisters, are attached to write the eighth film in the long-running franchise created by Kevin Williamson, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The sisters came to wider attention as the showrunners of the first season of Peacock’s Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne. Their TV credits also include writing and executive producing stints on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Suits, Fringe and Prodigal Son.

The new film is being developed after the strong performance of Scream 7, which opened on Feb. 27 and went on to become the franchise’s top-grossing entry, bringing in more than $200 million worldwide. It also marked the first Scream movie to play in Imax theaters, because apparently even murder mysteries need premium formats now.

Scream 7 also brought Williamson back in a big way. He directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Guy Busick, whose credits include the Ready or Not films and Abigail. The movie featured the return of Neve Campbell as the franchise’s final girl after she sat out Scream VI amid salary disputes. In this installment, Campbell’s character is joined by her teenage daughter, Tatum, played by Isabel May, who becomes Ghostface’s next target.

Earlier this month, Williamson suggested he may not direct the next chapter. “For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again,” he told Hello Sidney.

Shortly after Scream 7 premiered, Anna Camp, who appeared in the film, said she had also heard talk about another sequel. Asked about it, she said, “Just rumors, just rumors. I haven’t heard from anyone specifically that I worked with, like Kevin or Neve but I’ve heard the rumors going around that there’s a Scream 8.”

The cast of Scream 7 also included Courteney Cox, Matthew Lillard, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Joel McHale, Mckenna Grace, Michelle Randolph, Ethan Embry, Mark Consuelos, Jimmy Tatro, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann and Sam Rechner.

The Zuckerman sisters are represented by UTA and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Feldman, Rogal, Shikora & Clark.
