Sony has confirmed it will raise the retail prices for the standard PlayStation 5, the PS5 Pro, and the PlayStation Portal remote handheld in all regions. The company published the change in a blog post on March 27 and called the move a necessary step given ongoing economic pressures.
When the new prices kick in
The price adjustments take effect on April 2 globally. Sony said it reviewed the situation carefully and decided the increase was required to keep delivering its gaming products.

Here are the updated recommended retail prices that will apply starting April 2.
United States
- PS5 - $649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition - $599.99
- PS5 Pro - $899.99
United Kingdom
- PS5 - £569.99
- PS5 Digital Edition - £519.99
- PS5 Pro - £789.99
Europe
- PS5 - €649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition - €599.99
- PS5 Pro - €899.99
Japan
- PS5 - ¥97,980
- PS5 Digital Edition - ¥89,980
- PS5 Pro - ¥137,980
In dollar terms this equals a $100 increase for the base PS5 and a $150 increase for the PS5 Pro.
PlayStation Portal price change
The PlayStation Portal handheld will also be more expensive. Its new recommended prices are:
- United States - $249.99
- United Kingdom - £219.99
- Europe - €249.99
- Japan - ¥39,980
That is a $50 increase compared with the previous retail price.
Why this is happening
Sony did not list a single specific cause. The company referenced continued pressures in the global economic landscape. Industry observers point to factors such as higher component and production costs and ongoing memory supply issues as likely contributors.
Context from the industry
Sony is not the only console maker to raise prices in recent years. Microsoft increased prices for Xbox Series X and S hardware and accessories in 2025, and Nintendo has indicated price increases for its next system are under consideration amid rising memory costs.
If you were planning to buy Sony hardware soon, consider doing it before April 2 if you want the older price. After that date, the new RRPs above will apply.
