Hanks and Heller Reunite for a Baseball Dramedy

Tom Hanks is returning to the director he paired with for the Oscar-nominated 2019 film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. Marielle Heller will direct and both Hanks and Heller will produce through their production labels. The movie is an adaptation of Dave Eggers' short story The Comebacker, drawn from his collection The Forgetters.

What the Story Covers

The narrative follows Lionel, a fading sports journalist whose career and curiosity are reignited when a pitcher comes up from the minors after a serious head injury. The pitcher was struck in the skull by a batted ball and subsequently shows unexpected behavior, including moments of poetic speech. That altered voice helps Lionel write pieces that connect with readers across the country. Eggers' original short centers on the San Francisco Giants, but one source says the screenplay will focus on the New York Mets.

Cast, Studios, and Scheduling

  • Potential cast: Rap star Bad Bunny and Oscar nominee Colman Domingo are reportedly being considered for roles, though specific parts have not been announced.
  • Studio race: Several studios are in talks, with Sony Pictures currently in the lead thanks to a strong offer and its history releasing Heller and Hanks' earlier film.
  • Timing: Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, is on a world tour through the end of July, so scheduling remains uncertain.
  • Comments: Representatives for Bad Bunny and Colman Domingo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This will be another collaboration linking Hanks to Dave Eggers' work; Eggers has been a source for previous films starring Hanks. While the project is still sorting out cast and studio details, the combination of Hanks, Heller, and Eggers has already drawn significant interest.
