Capcom toys with the Mega Man rumor mill
Capcom has spent April Fool’s Day doing what game companies do best when they know everyone is already overthinking their trailers: feeding the speculation. The publisher jokingly “confirmed” a long-running fan theory that its upcoming sci-fi shooter Pragmata is actually a hidden Mega Man project.
That theory took off about a year ago, after fans decided the game’s futuristic setting and Diana’s blue outfit, especially the flared sleeves that vaguely resemble a Mega Buster, were not just design choices. No, obviously they were clues. The internet rarely meets a visual detail it cannot promote into a full conspiracy.
Why the theory caught on
Pragmata is still set to arrive later this month, roughly six years after it was first announced, and Capcom has presented it as a brand-new IP. But the fanbase was not in the mood to accept that at face value.
The arguments were simple enough:
- The game is sci-fi.
- Diana wears blue.
- The sleeves look a bit like Mega Man.
- People love a theory, especially one involving a beloved robot hero.
None of that is proof, of course. But it was enough to keep the rumor alive, and Capcom clearly noticed.
The April Fool’s video
A video posted to the Pragmata account leaned fully into the joke. It showed Diana running along a beach while the Mega Man 2 credits music plays, which is already a strong sign that nobody in the room was interested in subtlety.
Then the twist arrives. Hugh shows up looking exactly like the Blue Bomber, only for the reveal to land on an elaborate suit that resembles Mega Man. The face flips away to show Hugh underneath, and the clip ends with a hand-drawn note from Diana that reads: “Happy April Fool's Day ! :b”
The post itself spelled out the joke even more directly: “PRAGMATA is a Mega Man Game? April Fools! 😜 #PRAGMATAMoonBytes - Part 6”
So no, Capcom has not suddenly turned Pragmata into a stealth Mega Man revival, at least not as of this very obvious prank. Still, the company did put a surprising amount of effort into the bit, which is exactly the sort of thing that keeps theorycrafters mildly unhinged for another year.
And if the full game does include that oversized Mega Man costume as a nod to the fans, well, that would at least be a fitting reward for everyone who turned a blue sleeve into a franchise resurrection.
