The Crimson Nightmare is one of those bosses sent to you during House Roberts' faction quest. You find it inside Fort Perwin, which is full of Bleed Bandits. The boss itself is basically a sentient cloud of red gas that hurts you if you stand too close.
What makes this fight annoying
The gas damages you on contact, and the arena is crawling with bandits. If you try to melee the cloud without the right preparation, you will regret your choices. Fortunately, there are clear counters that make the encounter straightforward.
How to beat the Crimson Nightmare
Follow these practical steps and you will waste less time and revive less often.
- Grab a Scarlet Blades Gas Mask: This is the key item. It can drop from Bleed Bandits that wear masks with black eye lenses. Equip it and you become immune to the Nightmare's gas, so you can approach and deal damage safely.
- Use Axiom Force to stun the boss: The Nightmare has a core at its center. Target the core with Axiom Force and wrench it out. That knocks the boss down and gives a large window to hit it. If it recovers, hit the core again to repeat the stun.
- Clear the bandits before you start: Kill the enemies inside the fort and those in the boss arena first. If some enemies refuse to come out, bait them with a bow. Fewer distractions make the core-stun strategy much more reliable.
- Bring enough health and stamina: These stats matter for clearing the fort and surviving mistakes. Pack food for healing and make sure your stamina is high enough to dodge and sprint when needed.
- Refine your weapons: Higher damage speeds the fight up. Early weapon upgrades only require iron and copper, so invest in a couple of refinements before the boss.
If you arrive late in the quest line, that is fine. With a Scarlet Blades Gas Mask, repeated Axiom Force hits on the core, and the bandits cleared out first, the fight becomes routine. Follow those steps and the Crimson Nightmare stops feeling like a mystery and starts feeling like another box to check.
