Kailok the Hornsplitter is one of Crimson Desert's early major bosses. He is a corrupt merchant king who swings an arcane sword that shoots out line attacks, the same wave effect you will want on your side once you beat him. This fight is a clear step up in difficulty, and it punishes players who try to trade hits like they are in a street brawl.
Boss fight fundamentals
The simplest truth about fighting Kailok is this. Move sideways. His sword reaches far, and many of his attacks create long lines of damage that will hit you if you back away instead of dodging to the side. Blocking is not a reliable plan unless you can time a parry. Backwards dodges will not avoid some of the longer, beam style attacks.
Play defensively. You will win this fight by being patient and punishing openings, not by trying to mash your strongest combos. Follow this basic routine:
- 1. Evade and watch. Dodge to the left or right to get out of the line attacks. Look for tells in Kailok's animations so you know when a beam or a heavy swing is coming.
- 2. Hit twice or three times. When you get a clear opening, land two or three heavy attacks or a couple of Force Palm strikes. Doing more than that usually gets you hit back hard.
- 3. Repeat and finish. Keep repeating step one and two until you can use a finisher for big damage.
There are other options. For example, Blinding Flash can interrupt some of Kailok's moves. That is helpful, but the defensive approach above is the most consistent for players new to the fight. Also, make sure you have put at least one upgrade into health and stamina for basic survivability. If possible, upgrade your weapons and armor at the Smithy in Hernand before you take him on.
Skills that help
- Focus / Focused Insight: Restores Spirit for your charges and effectively gives you a free parry opportunity against Kailok's melee attacks.
- Turning Slash / Proficiency: Lets you swap quickly into a stronger attack to stack damage when an opening appears.
- Force Palm Pulse: Investing in Force Palm increases the damage you can safely apply during short openings.
Kailok can also be observed during the fight to learn Evasive Roll. It is useful, but not necessary to beat him, so do not make it the only focus of your run.
Rewards for beating Kailok
Defeating Kailok moves the story into Chapter 3 and gives several valuable rewards after the cutscene.
- Sword of the Lord. This is one of the best early-game weapons. It comes with a built-in Wind Slash effect, the same long wave attack Kailok uses. That property comes from an embedded Abyss Gear component which you can extract with a Witch.
- Seal of Greed for the Goldleaf Merchant Guild. When used it increases the value of trade goods sold to Goldleaf merchants by 20 percent, but the buff lasts only two hours. Plan a big sell session and do not waste the time window.
- Iron Ore x7.
In short, take it slow, dodge sideways, hit the short windows, and you will walk away with one of the best early swords and a tidy pile of loot. Kailok is tough the first time, but the fight teaches good habits you will use again.
