Good news for people who like capes and bad news for anyone who enjoys a functioning city government. The new season of Daredevil: Born Again throws Matt Murdock back into the chaos after Vincent D'Onofrio’s Mayor Fisk uses his power to outlaw superheroes and turn law enforcement into his private force. That crackdown includes locking up anyone who speaks out against him, costume or no costume.
How the show accidentally echoed real life
Showrunner Dario Scardapane told Dexerto that the way Season 2 lines up with recent headlines was not planned. The creative work began a year and a half ago, so the similarities emerged after the scripts were already in motion.
Scardapane said there was no way to know the story would become such a direct reflection of events people are reading about now. He called it "pretty chilling" to watch ideas that existed in comics years ago or in a screenplay written 18 months ago show up in current news. Asked if the season will feel cathartic to viewers, he said he hoped so but admitted that was a difficult thing to promise.
Daredevil as a resistance leader
The season pushes Daredevil into new territory. With the city turned against him, Matt Murdock becomes the backbone of an underground resistance, working with Karen Page, played by Deborah Ann Woll, to expose Fisk’s plans and the corruption that has taken hold.
Scardapane highlighted that audiences will see Daredevil in a role he has not held before. He pointed out that the character moves from underdog to a lightning rod for others, and that this shift opens up new questions and tensions for viewers to consider.
Why Marvel’s angle matters here
Executive producer Sana Amanat noted that this approach fits the long-standing Marvel habit of focusing on the experiences of everyday people. The series emphasizes the power of collective action and the idea that normal citizens can fight for truth, safety, and justice alongside costumed heroes.
- Who’s involved: Charlie Cox returns as Matt Murdock, Vincent D'Onofrio plays Mayor Fisk, and Deborah Ann Woll is Karen Page.
- What changed: Superheroes are outlawed and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force enforces Fisk’s rule.
- Plot focus: Daredevil leads an underground resistance to expose corruption and restore justice.
- Production note: The season began development about 18 months ago, so the parallels to current events were not intentional.
Season 2 appears set to mix street-level political tension with classic heroics. Whether viewers find the result cathartic, unnerving, or both remains to be seen.
