The Los Angeles Lakers edged the Orlando Magic 105-104 on Saturday thanks to Luke Kennard's last-second 3. But the highlight reel wasn’t just a shot. Late in the game Luka Doncic and Magic big man Goga Bitadze got into a verbal altercation that drew technical fouls for both players.
What happened on the court
Officials flagged Doncic and Bitadze after an exchange at the free-throw line. The league initially assessed Doncic with his 16th technical foul of the season, a number that would normally trigger a one-game suspension. The NBA rescinded that technical the following day.
Robert Horry’s comment and Draymond’s reply
After the game, former Lakers forward Robert Horry criticized the league’s technical foul decisions and mentioned a certain player who gets leeway when he argues with referees. That prompted a response from Draymond Green, who said he was surprised to be brought into the conversation.
Draymond on his podcast
"Goga Bitadze was trash-talking Luka at the foul line and Luka said at the free throw line that Bitadze said he would his whole family up," Green said, adding that he understood why Luka reacted. "At some point, I can’t stand for that; I got to stand up for myself."
Green also made a point of distancing himself from comments about players' families. "I don’t talk about people family. I talk a lot of stuff on the basketball court... I don’t talk about guys' family. Because no one’s going to come on the court and talk about my family. That line won't be crossed." He suggested Horry mentioned him to get attention and said he did not think his name belonged in that discussion.
Where the league landed
- Both Doncic and Bitadze received technical fouls during the game.
- Doncic's 16th technical was initially recorded, which would have led to a suspension.
- The NBA rescinded Doncic's technical the next day, removing the suspension threat.
Trash talk is part of pro basketball. There is, however, a commonly understood boundary: insulting or threatening a player’s family is widely viewed as off-limits. Draymond framed Luka’s response as a defensive reaction to that boundary being crossed, while also pushing back on being name-checked by Horry.
Quick take
Officials and the league adjusted the ruling, and Draymond backed Luka’s stance that some comments deserve a strong reply. At the same time, Green made it clear he does not tolerate attacks on family. The incident reminds everyone that there is a difference between arguing with referees and reacting to inflammatory trash talk from an opponent.
