Emily Rudd, who plays Nami in Netflix’s live-action One Piece, kept the character’s famous miniskirt while filming Season 2 in chilly weather. The costume team made some changes to help her stay warm, but Rudd insisted the skirt stay true to the manga version.
Costume tweaks to keep her moving and warm
Costume designer Kerry Anne Barnard told InStyle that the original manga design shows Nami in a vest. For the live-action shoot, the team needed the outfit to work for action scenes and colder conditions, so they added long sleeves to the top. That adjustment let Rudd perform her stunts while staying a bit warmer.
Rudd kept the skirt for the fans
Even with the temperature dropping and plenty of physical scenes, Barnard said Rudd chose to keep the short skirt. Barnard recounted that Rudd knew it would be cold, but told the team, "This is for the fans. I want to get this as correct as possible." According to Barnard, Rudd handled it like a pro while doing action in a very small skirt.
Why the outfit matters
Nami is one of the most recognizable members of the Straw Hat Pirates. In the manga and anime she changes outfits a lot, but cropped tops and short skirts show up frequently in her designs. The attention to detail in the live-action wardrobe is part of why Season 2 has been getting strong reactions from viewers and critics.
