Marvel is swinging big again, and Paul Bettany approves

Paul Bettany says the new MCU series VisionQuest follows the same bold instincts that made WandaVision stand out. In his view, Marvel tends to do best when it takes big risks, and this show is another example of that approach.

Bettany credits showrunner Terry Matalas with knowing the character deeply. He says Matalas understood who Vision is and who these stories are for. According to Bettany, Vision resonates with people who felt like outsiders growing up, and that perspective shaped the way the series was made.

Where Vision left off and where he goes next

To catch up the plot essentials: Vision originally died in Avengers: Infinity War. In WandaVision, Wanda created a hex version of Vision to live with her in an altered Westview. That hex version is not the same as the Vision in VisionQuest.

In VisionQuest, the agency SWORD reactivated Vision's real body. The twist is that his real body now carries the memories of Hex Vision after the two android versions clashed in the WandaVision finale. So the show deals with a character who is both familiar and changed, trying to work out who he is.

What Bettany says the show delivers

  • Big creative choices: Bettany believes Marvel benefits when it takes bold creative directions.
  • An outsider story: The series focuses on Vision as someone searching for identity and belonging.
  • Entertainment value: Bettany describes the show as fun and engaging while grappling with those themes.

In short, VisionQuest aims to be a character-driven, slightly unusual entry in the MCU that leans into big ideas and emotional stakes. Bettany thinks that approach works, especially for a character built around feeling out of place and trying to find his place in the world.
