Riot Games is updating how players in Brazil can access its games to comply with the new Statute of Children and Adolescents, or ECA. The law takes effect on March 17, and Riot has already put new age rules into place for several of its titles.

Which games are affected

Starting March 16, the following Riot titles will be rated 18+ for players in Brazil:

  • League of Legends
  • Teamfight Tactics
  • Wild Rift
  • 2XKO
  • Legends of Runeterra

Valorant is handled a bit differently. Players aged 12 to 17 will still be able to play, but only with parental consent.

How age verification will work

Players trying to access the 18+ titles in Brazil will have to prove they are adults. Riot will accept several verification methods, including:

  • a CPF number, which is Brazil's tax ID
  • a debit or credit card
  • a scan of an identity document
  • an age estimation facial scan

For Valorant players under 18, Riot requires an email for a parent or legal guardian. That adult will need to grant permission through Riot’s parental control system before the minor can play.

What happens to accounts of underage players

From March 18, Riot will pause accounts that belong to players who are underage for the newly rated games, as long as those players were honest about their birthdates. Paused accounts will not be deleted. Progress, unlocks, and purchased cosmetics will be preserved while the account is blocked.

Riot says it is evaluating the games under the ECA requirements and expects age ratings to return to their prior status by early 2027. When that happens, accounts that were paused may require parental permission to be reactivated.

If you live in Brazil and play Riot games, check your account details and make a plan. If you want to argue about whether stricter age ratings are a good idea, feel free to tell someone who will listen.
