Bernthal was tied up with his own projects

Vincent D’Onofrio addressed the Punisher absence after a fan complained that Jon Bernthal did not return for Season 2. In plain terms, D’Onofrio said Bernthal was busy filming his own hour long Punisher special and working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

What happened to Frank Castle?

At the end of Season 1, Frank Castle escaped from Fisk’s illegal prison by snapping a guard’s arm and apparently stealing the keys. That cliffhanger made many viewers expect a return, but D’Onofrio says Castle will not be Matt’s backup during this season.

Punisher shows up in the Spider-Man trailer

Bernthal is not disappearing from the MCU. He appears in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day opposite Tom Holland. The trailer shows a scene where Punisher rams the Web-Slinger with his van while chasing a runaway tank, they trade some lines, and Spidey stops him from swearing by smacking him in the face with webs.

Could he return later in the series?

It is still possible Punisher will reappear in a future Daredevil season. Showrunner Dario Scardapane told reporters that the mysterious direction of Season 3 will be set up in the final five minutes of Season 2. That suggests the door is open, even if it is closed for now.
