Toto Wolff accepts that if George Russell and Kimi Antonelli end up fighting for the Formula 1 title this year, things will get heated on track. Still, he is confident the situation will not replay the bitter split that developed between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
Why people are making the comparison
When Hamilton and Rosberg became teammates at Mercedes in 2013, they were old karting acquaintances who joined forces to help a team that had struggled after returning to the sport in 2010. Once the hybrid rules kicked in and Mercedes began to dominate from 2014, that friendship deteriorated as both drivers chased championships.
Hamilton took the titles in 2014 and 2015. Rosberg won in 2016 and then suddenly retired, saying he had achieved what he wanted.
The current picture at Mercedes
The new regulations this season have put Mercedes back at the front. After two races, Russell and Antonelli each have one win and sit separated by a single point following victories in Australia and China.
Wolff's view on the rivalry
Wolff says the Russell-Antonelli dynamic is "completely different" from what happened with Hamilton and Rosberg. He pointed out that drivers are wired to win, so close championship battles will naturally become physical on track.
In Wolff's words, when the title is at stake, "the elbows come out." That is normal racing behaviour and something the team must oversee to keep competition healthy and constructive.
How Mercedes sees its role
- Shared background: Both Russell and Antonelli came through the Mercedes junior pathway, so the team has guided their careers since junior single-seater days and even karting.
- Management required: Wolff accepts that the team will need to manage on-track friction, but he believes the personalities and context are different now.
- Confidence in the setup: For the moment Wolff feels the situation is not heading toward the kind of animosity that marked the Hamilton-Rosberg era.
In short, expect aggressive wheel-to-wheel racing if Russell and Antonelli fight for the crown. Expect Mercedes to watch closely and step in where needed. Wolff is calm about the prospect and thinks history will not repeat itself in the same way.
