Good news for players who liked running, jumping, and blaming the level designer: Black Ops 7 is bringing back Freerun. The mode lands in the Season 3 mid-season update, which the devs expect to roll out in late April or early May.

What is Freerun?

Freerun is a race-focused mode where movement is the whole point. Ten players will use their movement skills to try to be the first across the finish line. The course is built to punish mistakes, so speed and precision matter more than aiming skills.

How Freerun will work in Black Ops 7

  • Player count: 10 racers at a time.
  • Map: A new map called Ascent, designed specifically for Freerun.
  • Layout: Ten distinct zones with large jumps and tight paths. The wording from the studio calls them vertigo-inducing jumps and little room for error.
  • Rewards: The Freerun event launches alongside the mode, offering unique weapon camos and other event rewards.
  • Timing: The mode arrives mid-season, after the Season 3 launch. More details will appear with the Season 3 Reloaded update.

Where this idea came from

Long-time Call of Duty players will remember the original Free Run in Black Ops 3. That mode used jetpack-style movement and even added shooting targets that cost you time if you missed them. Modern Warfare in 2023 introduced Get High mode and its variants, which acted like spiritual successors. Unlike Get High, the Black Ops 3 original was played solo against the clock. Expect Black Ops 7’s Freerun to sit somewhere between that solo clocked run and the multiplayer Get High style.

Other things to look forward to in Season 3

  • The fresh Season 3 update drops on April 2 and brings classic maps Plaza from Black Ops 2 and Gridlock from Black Ops 4 back into rotation.
  • The Season 3 Battle Pass includes the MK35 ISR Assault Rifle and the VST SMG.

We will get more concrete details as the mid-season Reloaded update approaches, but if you like speed, precise jumps, and a little nail-biting, Freerun looks like it will be worth booting up for.
