Bethesda has a two-part plan arriving on April 7: a free update called Free Lanes and a paid story expansion titled Terran Armada. Both aim to change how players move through and experience Starfield, not just add a new mission or two.
What to expect on April 7
The Free Lanes update and Terran Armada expansion will introduce a few headline changes. Bethesda says the update will make interplanetary travel within star systems possible, give exploration more expression, and expand customization options. In short, it is meant to make the galaxy feel more connected and customizable.
Key features
- Interplanetary travel within systems, so you can move between planets in the same system without returning to the map screen.
- Richer exploration, with better ways to interact with environments and discover content.
- Expanded customization, covering ships, gear, or other player-facing options.
Is Starfield finished?
Not remotely. Even though Todd Howard confirmed that most of the studio is working on The Elder Scrolls 6, he was clear that Bethesda plans to support Starfield for the long term. He said the studio will continue to back the game, and that there are still lore and locations the team wants to explore.
Studio art director Istvan Pely added that the team has discussed many different DLC ideas, and that the list of possibilities is large. He and others at the studio said they intend to keep releasing updates after Free Lanes and Terran Armada. Those updates could be small, large, or somewhere in between, but the point is they are not done with Starfield.
Bottom line
If you were worried April 7 would be the curtain call, relax. Bethesda is shipping meaningful changes soon, and the studio says it will continue to support Starfield even while work ramps up on the next big project. There is more to come, according to the people making the game.
