The end is finally, actually here
The Boys has reached the point where there is, apparently, nothing left to tweak, polish, or otherwise torment in post-production. Showrunner Eric Kripke announced on social media that season 5 is now complete, which also means the entire series is officially wrapped.
In his post, Kripke said he was working on "the last color tweaks on the last VFX shots of the last episode of The Boys." He added, "Now 100% done. It never truly hit me that it’s over, cause there was always something to work on. Until today. This was the best professional experience of my life. I hope you like it. April 8."
So yes, the final season is finished, the final episode is finished, and the show itself is finished. Television rarely offers anything so neat, so naturally it arrives after a series built on blood, chaos, and increasingly bad decisions.
Kripke planned for five seasons all along
This ending should not come as a huge surprise to anyone who has been paying attention. Kripke has said before that he always intended the series to run for five seasons, and that he made that case to Amazon early on.
"I kept saying to Amazon, 'This is going to be five,'" he previously said. "They let me finish season four, and it ends with the world exploding, right? There’s really nowhere else to go except the finale. Some of the senior executives were like, 'Wait, do you really want to end it with season five?' I’m like, 'I wasn’t joking. And respectfully, you have no choice,' I mean, you cannot go back to the status quo after Homelander takes over the United States. So they're letting me end it on our terms."
That is, at least, a refreshingly direct way to describe a long-running franchise ending exactly where the creator says it should. A rare bit of order in a show that has never shown much interest in it.
With post-production now done, The Boys is officially headed toward its last chapter, and Kripke has made it clear he considers the ride a career high.
