Human rights concerns

Amnesty International says the 2026 World Cup in the United States is drifting away from the promise of being “safe, free and inclusive”. The group warned that millions of fans attending the tournament could face serious human rights risks instead, which is not exactly the kind of headline organisers usually put on the brochure.

What Amnesty is warning about

The rights group pointed to three main concerns:

  • Mass deportations
  • Heavy security measures
  • Arbitrary arrests

According to Amnesty, these issues raise the risk that supporters travelling to the event will encounter treatment that falls well short of the tournament’s stated ideals.

The warning was issued on 30 March 2026, with the World Cup still months away. The basic message is hard to miss: a global sporting spectacle can still come with very unglamorous realities on the ground.
