Good news for plane tickets and last-minute suit cases

Shia LaBeouf has been given permission to travel to Rome for his father's baptism after an earlier court refusal. New filings show a different magistrate approved a one-week trip, as long as he returns in time for his next hearing.

What changed between the first no and the eventual yes

  • Original request: He originally asked to travel from March 1 to March 8, but a judge refused and told him to remain in Louisiana and seek substance-abuse treatment.
  • New filing: On March 4 his lawyer filed again, this time including a full travel itinerary. Apparently judges like detailed plans more than vibes.
  • New magistrate: Magistrate Peter Hamilton reviewed the updated request and authorized the weeklong trip, on the condition Shia be back for his March 19 court date.

The legal mess behind the weekend getaway

This permission follows a string of incidents in New Orleans. During Mardi Gras in February, LaBeouf was involved in a bar fight and was treated by medics. That episode led to charges of two counts of simple battery. He was arrested again on February 28 on an additional battery charge tied to the same incident.

Authorities say during his arrest he used homophobic slurs. In later comments, LaBeouf said he does not believe he has a drinking problem, but described having a Napoleon complex and a lot of anger. He also said the altercation began after he felt uncomfortable when some men touched his leg.

So what now?

He gets his week in Rome for a family baptism, provided he honors the court's timeline and returns for the March 19 hearing. The courtroom saga isn't over, but for now the actor can practice the awkward art of flying economy or pretending he booked business class.

Short, emotional family trip, legal conditions attached, and still plenty of drama left in the courthouse — just the kind of celebrity plotline the internet was built for.
