Apple rolled out Live Translation alongside its newer AirPods, and yes, the idea is simple: put some headphones in your ears and get near-instant translations when someone speaks another language. It is not magic, but it feels close enough for a dinner conversation or a confused tourist moment.
What you need first
Before you start dreaming of flawless conversations, check these hardware and software requirements:
- Supported AirPods: AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, and the 2026 version of AirPods Max.
- Supported iPhone: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 model.
- Software: Your iPhone must be updated to iOS 26.
If you do not meet these requirements, Live Translation will not run because Apple does the language processing on the device itself for privacy and speed.
Set up Live Translation
Once you have the right gear and iOS version, there are a few setup steps to get everything talking to each other.
Enable Apple Intelligence
Open Settings on your iPhone, go to Apple Intelligence & Siri, and switch on the Apple Intelligence toggle. Live Translation depends on those on-device AI features being active.
Download the languages you want
Make sure you add both the language you will hear and the language you want to respond in. With your AirPods paired and in your ears, open Settings, tap the AirPods’ name, then choose Languages and download the language packs you need. Doing this ahead of time avoids awkward buffering while someone is mid-sentence.
Apple says all translation processing happens on your iPhone. Your conversations are not sent off to Apple servers for translation, which is why the feature needs newer hardware.
How to start a Live Translation
There are a few ways to launch a live session. Pick whichever fits your style.
- Open the Translate app on the iPhone, tap the Live tab, pick the languages, and tap Start Conversation.
- If you use AirPods earbuds, press and hold both stems at the same time to start Live Translation.
- Ask Siri out loud: say "Siri, start live translation".
- Add a Translate shortcut to Control Center, or set the iPhone’s Action Button to launch Translate for faster access.
What happens during translation
When someone speaks to you in another language, you will hear the translation through your AirPods in your chosen language. When you speak, the app translates your words in the other language. You can either show the translated text on your iPhone in the Translate app’s Live tab or play the translated audio through your iPhone speakers by tapping the play button.
To end a session, tap the X button on screen.
One important note
Apple warns that AI translations can sometimes be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. If a translation looks odd or elicits a strange reaction, assume the translation may be the culprit rather than the person opposite you.
That is the gist of Live Translation: set it up, download the languages, and let your AirPods do the heavy lifting. It is not perfect, but it can keep conversations moving when language barriers pop up.
